Like the content: good explanations of what’s known and unknown. I like science articles that present the wonder and mystery, and you do that well. You speak a little too fast, like you’re trying to cram it all in to the time allotted. Not sure if it should be lengthened or content edited. Spare visual style is interesting…very Apple ad-ish, but I’m not sure it’s engaging enough. You do project a confident approach to the material.
From Twitter:
“It’s a little different. I’d love your responses.”
.
This is ok, though I’m used to the previous way, with something in the background. Some non-distracting image behind you or to the side of you related to the subject you are speaking about would be good, but I don’t think you want these to be productions that take a lot of time to put together. This is ok; the previous way was ok.
Interesting topic and good presentation. One thing that might help drive the point home a little clearer would be to have some simple graphics, aka powerpoint slides, that showed the relationships that you mentioned. For instance, when you talked about how two parents didn’t have the gene anomaly, but the child did, you could have a graphic representation of each parent with arrows to the child and an outside effect modifying the genes. It’s a little work to create them, but I think it would go a long way to making the topic easier to follow. Just my $.02. Good work.
Nice work! I like the addition of the multiple cuts and multiple angles. I’m sure it’s a lot more work than previously, but it makes for a great looking video.
My main thing, the background. I’d prefer either a solid white or off-white, or black, depending on what you’re wearing of course. Or, have you considered making the background more dynamic with graphics related to your topic?
Presentation is really top notch, your love and enthusiasm really comes through and that’s what always makes the video.
Well I loved it. Your pacing is spot on, I wouldn’t slow down at all. The white backdrop gives the show a much more modern feel and allows us to concentrate on you and what you’re saying. Since you are very animated I really don’t think anymore is needed.
The simple cuts to examples also work really well. Overall the editing feels right.
Love the new style and the content is great as always.
Kirsten, I have enjoyed all the prior videos but thought this was the best so far. The topic was very interesting and I liked the idea of presenting one subject instead of short segments on several different topics. Going into some detail makes the information more understandable and more interesting.
The 08-10-04 video seemed more personal, this video perhaps more professional. Graphics would add some entertainment value but I know would also be more expensive.
You are doing a great job and definitely on the right track. I look forward to the next video and hopefully seeing more of you in whatever media you decide to focus on.
So ah… someone’s bought a lapel mic?
Much clearer audio than before. Make the background a little more interesting and the show podcastable through itunes and you’re on a winner.
Personally, I liked the minimal background. I am easily distracted and this allowed me to focus on what you were saying. Sometimes graphics enhance a presentation, sometimes they are just ham-handed and pointless. If you decide to add any in future, I’d suggest being very selective.
I have to point out the sound is SOOOOO much better. It seems you were able to find a studio. Awesome. Echo is another distraction for me. (Okay, maybe I have some ADD to contend with.) The point is: it sounds so much more polished.
RE: Devoting your time to one topic… My feeling is this sounds more like a professional approach. The multiple topics and multiple cuts felt more “fun,” however. Hmmm. I don’t know how to resolve that.
And I LOVE the graphic on that T-shirt! You have such good taste.
Is it a scientist thing to say “process-eez” as opposed to “process-ehz?” Crisis to crises, I get. But that’s different. Merriam-Webster says both are okay. So I’m not faulting you. I’m just saying I don’t hear it unless it’s during Science Friday on NPR or TWiS or tSW. (Just wondering.)
I look forward to the “This Week in Science with Dr. Kikki” TV show. You would be fanTAStic!
Great job, Kirsten!
I am reminded of the http://www.GeekBrief.tv with Cali Lewis, only for Science! Great next step in the evolution of your project. I couple suggestions – consider making it available via RSS as a podcast, so I can subscribe with iTunes. Also, you might be able to get a couple sponsors to help with production costs.
p.s. I miss the funny endings…
Best wishes,
Chuck
