On the Lists

January 12th, 2009

Each year there are several lists compiled of the top this of that’s of the past year. I’m honored to once again be on the Wired Sexiest Geeks list even though there aren’t any pictures of me in a bikini available to the public on the web. It is a testament to the idea that there is more to sexy than being scantily clad.

More exciting, however, is my inclusion as a runner up on Violet Blue’s top 10 sexiest geeks list (Thanks to some comments, I just realized that the site is potentially NSFW. You know, attention is a funny thing. I didn’t even see the sexy pics and ads lining the article on either side.)

Her list is full of sexy, brainy, geeky people who do amazing things in the world. Violet has a method for choosing her annual top 10, which (I have to say) is an improvement over the bashfest that Wired has developed. (I do hope that Wired improves their voting system if they have a sexiest geeks contest next year… please!)

Anyway, thanks for almost putting me in the top 10, Violet! I’m sure that I was number 11… 😉

While I am sure that you don’t want to bite the media hand that feeds you, do you not think the Wired article helps perpetuate the rather unevolved attitude to women that exists in the tech world? This post http://suw.org.uk/2009/01/06/join-me-on-ada-lovelace-day/ and the links in it make the point more forcefully than I can, (and perhaps more forcefully than I would wish to).

I don’t find Violet Blue’s piece objectionable, partly because it from a woman, though why that should make a difference I am not sure, perhaps it’s on the same principle that only black people can use the word “nigger”. Mainly though it’s because she is challenging rather than reinforcing sexual stereotypes, and the tone of the piece is more knowing and ironic.

I took a look at the Violet Blue link during my lunch break at work. Please add NSFW. I have no problem with nude pictures. However, the government agency I work for may have a different view.

I would totally put you near the top of the list. You were the hottest science geek in both of our UCD Physiology cohorts. Kisses.

    Pssst…It’s Troy

Eleven is better than ten. It’s one louder.

By blogging on this you’re actually admitting that you care. Guess what, those lists are the dummiest thing I’ve seen. As if playing videogames makes anyone a geek… ridiculous.
Screw that, enjoy science, being smart is one of the most efficient ways of looking effectively sexy.

Strange! How could I have seemingly been the only one to nominate you over at V. Blue’s? (Unless there were others via e-mail, of course) You were robbed! Can any of the others hula-hoop? I doubt it.

I don’t know how you’re going to find the courage to get up each morning after this crushing omission!
