Happy

March 16th, 2006

I’m actually happy with how things are going this week. When last week seemed as though life was pure bleakness, I didn’t know how I could continue forward. But, this week: my mom came home from the hospital, I have re-coverslipped half of my messed up slides, I went to the library and took got the articles I’ve been needing for weeks, and I started working out regularly again. So, all told, things are looking up and I am happy about it.

this weekend I’ll be attending the Sacramento Regional Science Fair. I’m interested in interviewing a few of the top students about their projects and experiences for a short pre-produced piece I’m putting together for my radio show. Last year I judged the competition, which was incredible fun. The day was really long, and it was difficult to pick a winner there were so many amazing projects. I’m sure this year will only be better.

And, finally, as St. Patrick Day looms upon us, check out this tidbit. All is not well in Ireland. find out why the favorite holiday of so many around the world is being called “the most depressing and dangerous” day of the year. However, I know that come tomorrow evening I will most likely be celebrating my Irish heritage instead of wallowing in depression for the old country.

Hairy, hairy, quite contrary

Now, this is something to write home about…

I will never cease to be amazed by the diversity of life on this planet.

The Damage is Done…

March 7th, 2006

So, my mom is in the hospital again. This time with the flu or something. They don’t know for certain yet, just that her blood pressure this morning was 60/25. By all means she shouldn’t be alive now with a BP that low. But, they are pumping fluids and sugars and medications into her veins to nurse her back to health.

She hates hospitals, but it won’t bother her for long because she won’t even remember being there once she gets home. Even so, I do wish that it were a better hospital for although she’s being cared for, she’s not really getting the care that she needs.

You see, my mom has multiple sclerosis. And, it’s not the pretty kind of MS that Montel Williams or Annette Funicello have. Theirs is the kind that allows you to have a life. Hers is the kind that destroys everything about your life. My mom used to be engaged and interested in life. She was a poet, and a mother. Now she is a disease, and there was really nothing that could be done to stop it from happening.

Doesn’t take a Rocket Scientist…

March 3rd, 2006

So, this isn’t science, but omg… I find it incredibly funny. I guess this story goes to show how this country really is sitting on knife edge since 9-11.

Friends are where the heart is

February 27th, 2006

I came home last night from a long weekend in Los Angeles visiting some very good friends, and I have to say that LA miight truly be the city of angels just because they are there. It is envigorating to visit people who love you and believe in you. Although I did not get much sleep during the four days that we were down south, I do feel more energized than I did before the trip. Strange what conversations can do for you when they are with the right people.

Now I hope that I can keep that energy with me for a while as I get back to work on my dissertation.

Swan Song

November 22nd, 2005

So, tomorrow is my last day at WNBC-TV. I have been having a fantastic time here, and have learned much (not least significantly that my typing skills suck). I have a new respect for the news, and the people who get it one the air everynight. Although, the news is now a much more human endeavor in my eyes than it was previously. I’ll miss working here for certain. It’s my hope that this experience will open new doors for me, and that it is just the beginning of a whole new life.

Thanksgiving will be spent here in the Big Apple. We were invited to dinner with some new friends, which I am really looking forward to. I’ll miss my family, but home is coming soon, and I will see them when I get there. I just couldn’t stand the idea of trying to brave the holiday travel on the biggest travel weekend of the year.

After Thanksgiving, we are expecting our friends Jeff and Kat to join us for a few days of unadulterated New York fun. Then, MIAMI! We are all planning a trip to the hurricane beaten southern state to visit some other friends. Then back to New York for packing and mailing, and then home. A lot to do in a couple of short weeks, but it should all be fantastic. Hopefully, I’ll have some time to post again before the adventure is over for real.

Ahhh… the Colors…

November 7th, 2005

This past weekend was one of much needed relaxation. Marshall and I rented a car and headed to the Berkshires in Massachusetts for a couple days recharging. While the cold has been gradual and late in arriving this year, it still left us with beautiful views of reds, gold, and bronzes. Having never seen the color change on the eastern coast in the fall, I was duly impressed at the standards flown by nature.

Holy Cow, Batman…

November 2nd, 2005

What an amazing weekend! Halloween in this city is amazing. I came home from a day at the office, getting off at my usual subway stop on 6th and 14th, and found a mass of people over flowing from the street level down into the stairwell. I had to fight my way out of the subway against this sea of people in all manner of costumes and decoration. The energy and excitment in the air was fully tangible, thick as butta.

Sorry, sorry, sorry…

October 28th, 2005

I haven’t been posting lately due to home computer trouble and the fact that I can never remember the entire web address to post on my blog while at work. Needless to say, the situation has finally been remedied, and I will henceforth blog away. I’ve got some work to do here at WNBC right now, so I must take a break, but I’ll be back with loads of NYC information. There is so much going on here… I just have to say that I love this city.

Arrgh… the creeping crud

October 10th, 2005

The sickness has its hold. Grrr… I hate having colds. I’ve spent the entire day in bed trying to get rid of a sore throat. Meanwhile missing out on all the excitement that NYC has to offer. I’ve been fighting it for the past week, and a weekend of late nights has pushed the balance to sick. Blargh.

What a couple of weeks it has been!
